Gen. Amos to Replace Conway as CMC

General James F. Amos was confirmed by the Senate on September 30th, 2010 as the next Commandant of the Marine Corps. He will replace General James T. Conway, who is retiring after serving in the top Marine billet since 2006. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on October 22nd. This will be the first time in history that an aviation officer has served as Commandant.

He stated during his confirmation hearing that his top priority will be winning the war in Afghanistan. He also made headlines when he stated that he opposes the repeal of the controversial "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. He did state that regardless of his personal preference, he will uphold and enforce any laws regarding that.

General Amos is the current Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps. A Naval aviator by trade, General Amos has held command at all levels from Lieutenant Colonel to Lieutenant General. Most notably he commanded the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing in combat during Operations Iraqi Freedom I and II from 2002-2004, followed by command of the II Marine Expeditionary Force from 2004-2006. He subsequently served as the Commanding General, Marine Corps Combat Development Command and as the Deputy Commandant, Combat Development and Integration from 2006 to July 2008. General Amos was promoted to his present rank and assumed the duties of Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps on 2 July 2008.
